Impulsive loading of clamped monolithic and sandwich beams over a central patch

An analytical model is developed for the response of clamped monolithic and sandwich beams subjected to impulse loading over a central loading patch. A number of topologies of sandwich core are investigated, including the honeycomb core, pyramidal core, prismatic diamond core and metal foam. The various cores are characterised by their dependencies of through-thickness compressive strength and longitudinal tensile strength upon relative density. Closed-form expressions are derived for the deflection of the beam when the ratio r of length of loading patch to the beam span exceeds 0.5. In contrast, an ordinary differential equation needs to be solved numerically for the choice r<0.5. Explicit finite element calculations show that most practical shock loadings can be treated as impulsive and the accuracy of the impulsive analytical predictions is confirmed. The analytical formulae are employed to determine optimal geometries of the sandwich beams that maximise the shock resistance of the beams for a given mass. The optimisation reveals that sandwich beams have a superior shock resistance relative to monolithic beams of the same mass, with the prismatic diamond core sandwich beam providing the best performance. Further, the optimal sandwich beam designs are only mildly sensitive to the length of the loading patch.     

Starting solutions for some unsteady unidirectional flows of Oldroyd-B fluids

Analytical expressions for the velocity fields corresponding to the motions of an Oldroyd-B fluid due to oscillations of an infinite flat plate as well as those induced by an oscillating pressure gradient and pressure jumps are determined by means of the Fourier sine transform. The corresponding solutions for a Maxwell and a Newtonian fluid appear as limiting cases of the solutions established here. Relevant physical properties of the flows and their dependence on material and geometry parameters are discussed. (Received: August 16, 2005; revised: December 19, 2005)     

Minimum embedding of P3‐designs into (K4—e)‐designs

A (K₄ ? e)‐design on v + w points embeds a P₃‐design on v points if there is a subset of v points on which the K₄ ? e blocks induce the blocks of a P₃‐design. It is shown that w ≥ ¾(v ? 1). When equality holds, the embedding design is easily constructed. In this paper, the next case, when w = ¾v, is settled with finitely many exceptions. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Robust Equilibria in Indefinite Linear-Quadratic Differential Games

Equilibria in dynamic games are formulated often under the assumption that the players have full knowledge of the dynamics to which they are subject. Here, we formulate equilibria in which players are looking for robustness and take model uncertainty explicitly into account in their decisions. Specifically, we consider feedback Nash equilibria in indefinite linear-quadratic differential games on an infinite time horizon. Model uncertainty is represented by a malevolent input which is subject to a cost penalty or to a direct bound. We derive conditions for the existence of robust equilibria in terms of solutions of sets of algebraic Riccati equations.

Hyperchromats with linear dependence of longitudinal chromatic aberration on wavelength

Optical lens systems that are characterized by a chromatic aberration of a predefined form are called hyperchromats. Our work describes a theory of hyperchromats with a linear dependence of longitudinal chromatic aberration on wavelength. The equations are derived for calculation of basic design parameters of these optical systems and some examples of hyperchromatic optical systems are shown. Mentioned optical systems can be used especially in 3D imaging systems and confocal microscopy.

We attempt here to use the kinematic method of yield design in the case of a porous medium subjected to flow (with or without free surface), without looking for the exact solution of the pressure field. The method proposed here is based on the use of approximate pressure fields. In this paper, we show how, under different conditions concerning the yield criterion and the velocity field, the use of such approximate fields allows one to obtain a necessary condition for stability without having to find the real pressure field.
